Many confined spaces are not entered frequently, which can lead to a false sense of security when access is required.

What Does Irish Legislation Require?
In Ireland, employers have a legal duty to protect anyone required to work in a confined space.
The Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (Confined Spaces) Regulations 2001 require employers to:
- Avoid confined space entry wherever it is reasonably practicable.
- Carry out a suitable hazard identification and risk assessment before any entry.
- Implement a safe system of work that has been planned, organised and maintained to ensure the work can be carried out safely.
- Provide appropriate information, instruction and training for anyone involved in confined space work.
- Put suitable and sufficient emergency and rescue arrangements in place before work begins.
Failure to meet these legal requirements can expose workers to significant risks and may result in enforcement action where employers have not taken appropriate precautions.
