Leadership in safety is not about authority. It is about behaviour. Effective safety leaders:
- Demonstrate commitment through consistent actions
- Communicate clearly and listen actively
- Recognise safe behaviour as well as address unsafe acts
- Show empathy, especially after incidents or near misses
Strong leaders create environments where employees feel valued and confident to raise concerns. This is how proactive cultures are built.
Developing Leadership Capability Across the Workforce
- Train supervisors in communication and coaching. Technical expertise is important, but the ability to motivate and engage people is what drives safe performance.
- Integrate leadership modules into technical courses. Linking safety and leadership helps reinforce personal accountability.
- Encourage peer discussion forums. Regular sessions where supervisors share experiences promote continuous growth.
- Recognise leadership behaviour publicly. Acknowledging those who model safe habits encourages others to follow their lead.
KPI performance reviews revealed that communication between managers/ leads and their teams was inconsistent. While procedures were clear, staff felt their feedback wasn’t being heard resulting in low morale and occasional tension during meetings/handovers.
Due to this, Higher Management underwent training to benefit and improve communications between managers and staff so the lines of communication were clear and open
