The Impact of Lithium Ion Batteries on Fire Safety Planning
Lithium ion batteries are now central to modern business operations. They power electric vehicles, forklifts, power tools, data centres, consumer electronics and renewable energy storage systems. These technologies offer clear operational and environmental advantages, yet they also present new and significant fire safety risks that many organisations are not yet prepared to manage.
Fires involving lithium ion batteries behave very differently from fires involving conventional combustible materials. Thermal runaway is an uncontrolled chain reaction that causes extreme self heating and rapid combustion within battery cells. Once triggered, it can produce highly intense fires, release toxic gases, reignite after they appear to be suppressed, and overwhelm traditional fire-fighting systems. These incidents can occur with little or no warning and can escalate at speed, even in facilities with strong maintenance standards.

Unique Fire Behaviour,
Fires involving lithium-ion batteries behave very differently from conventional combustible materials. Thermal runaway is an uncontrolled chain reaction that causes extreme self-heating and rapid combustion within battery cells. Critically, this process is self-propagating: once one cell fails, neighbouring cells can ignite in sequence, creating escalating fires that are difficult to contain. These incidents can produce highly intense flames, release toxic gases such as hydrogen fluoride (HF), reignite after appearing suppressed, and overwhelm traditional fire-fighting systems. They can occur with little or no warning and escalate at speed, even in facilities with strong maintenance standards.
Beyond the immediate fire hazard, lithium ion battery incidents can lead to extensive business interruption, reputational harm, supply chain delays and complex clean-up requirements caused by toxic gas release or contaminated water run off.
Many organisations do not fully recognise the fire risks linked to lithium ion technology until an incident occurs or until a risk assessment exposes major control gaps. Common weaknesses include poor storage practices, where large quantities of batteries are kept too close together without suitable spacing, containment or temperature management. Overcharging or the use of unsuitable charging equipment can also lead to overheating. In many facilities, detection systems are not sensitive enough to identify the early stages of battery failure. Fire suppression systems are often not designed for the behaviour of lithium ion fires, and staff knowledge around correct handling, charging and disposal procedures can be limited.
Inadequate segregation, with batteries stored in high-traffic areas instead of dedicated, out-of-the-way racking systems designed to reduce exposure and improve containment.
EHS International supports organisations in addressing these risks through targeted consultancy. Our team conducts detailed fire risk assessments that examine storage layouts, charging systems, fire suppression capabilities and operational controls. We work closely with facility managers, safety teams and insurers to design protection measures that account for the specific behaviour of battery related fires.
We also advise clients on emerging best practice, including the use of thermal monitoring, automatic shut off mechanisms, dedicated battery storage areas and specialist containment solutions. Training programmes are developed to ensure staff understand safe handling requirements and the correct emergency response procedures.
Working with EHS International offers clear advantages. Our assessments reduce the likelihood of a lithium ion incident through early identification of risk. We ensure that fire safety systems are suitable for the dynamics of battery related fires. We help demonstrate proactive compliance to regulators, clients and insurers. Our work protects operational continuity and critical assets, and it supports the safe long term integration of battery technology within growing businesses.
