On World Suicide Prevention Day, we unite to raise awareness, support those in need, and take meaningful action to prevent suicide. Provisional figures from the Central Statistics Office (CSO) in Ireland show a decline in suicides, down to 302 in 2023 from 548 in 2018. While these numbers are encouraging, the work to prevent suicide and support mental health continues.

WSP24-1-1024x310 | World Suicide Prevention Day 2024: Changing the Narrative on Suicide | EHS International

John Meehan, HSE Assistant National Director and Head of the National Office for Suicide Prevention, urges us all to open up conversations about mental health with the message “Let’s Talk About Suicide.” Recognising the signs of distress and offering support can help save lives. We can all play a role in creating hope and reducing stigma.

Changing the Narrative on Suicide: What You Can Do

The theme for this year is “Changing the Narrative on Suicide,” emphasising the need to shift how we talk about and understand suicide. This approach aims to break the silence and stigma surrounding mental health challenges, encouraging open, compassionate conversations. By changing the narrative, we focus on prevention, support, and understanding, rather than judgement. It calls on everyone to take an active role in fostering hope, offering help, and ensuring that those who are struggling feel heard and valued.
